sustainability & ethics

beady babies is proudly an entirely handmade and slow fashion brand committed to promoting sustainable and ethical practices in the jewelry industry. in line with this commitment, the majority of jewelry is made with keshi pearls and irregular pearls as a conscious choice, both for their unique beauty and minimal environmental impact.

keshi and irregular pearls are a type of pearl that forms accidentally, usually as a byproduct of pearl cultivation. they form naturally without a host nuclei and as a result are typically irregularly shaped and composed entirely of nacre. they often have unique and organic shapes, making them prized for their natural beauty and rarity in the world of pearl jewelry.

keshi and irregular pearls stand as a symbol of ethical sourcing within the jewelry industry. by using these pearls, we proudly support:

biodiversity preservation: they are derived without causing direct harm to oysters, thereby respecting the lives of these marine creatures and allowing oysters to continue their essential roles in marine ecosystems without disruption.

resource efficiency: unlike traditional pearl farming, keshi and irregular pearl cultivation does not require as many resources, such as freshwater and energy, reducing the strain on natural resources.

reduced waste: traditional pearl farming produce waste in the form of unused bead nuclei and disposed irregular/imperfect shaped pearls. keshi and irregular pearls eliminate this waste, aligning with the principles of a circular economy.

lower carbon footprint: the reduced resource consumption and waste production associated with keshi and irregular pearls help contribute to a lower carbon footprint.
